Walnut Vice Mayor Allen Wu and Diamond Bar Mayor Andrew Tang, along with three others, visited World Journal President Yu Zhiqin on the afternoon of the 4th to discuss public safety and city development in both municipalities. Wu shared the latest crime statistics for October, showing that Walnut’s crime rate dropped 34.5% compared to the same period in previous years, while Diamond Bar saw a 5.5% decrease—indicating significant improvement in public safety. He emphasized that the city government will continue strengthening safety measures and welcomes more residents and businesses to join in creating a safer, more livable environment. “Walnut is a city very suitable for living and working,” Vice Mayor Wu said. Despite limited police staffing, the city benefits from strong community organizations and a culture of neighborly cooperation. Many residents share real‑time safety information through community groups, allowing police to respond quickly. He stressed that collaboration between residents and law enforcement is key to maintaining community safety, and that joint efforts can more effectively deter crime and drive away “petty criminals.” Wu also noted that Walnut has a healthy budget surplus and available land for development. Several small and medium‑sized development projects are already underway, and the city’s financial condition remains stable. He said the city’s main revenue source continues to be business attraction, and he hopes to bring in more well‑known restaurants and large supermarkets to improve convenience for residents and stimulate economic growth. He added that the city government will continue improving public safety to create a more business‑friendly environment. To encourage business investment and strengthen security, the city has introduced a $3,000 subsidy for businesses to purchase surveillance equipment and security systems. Applicants only need to submit receipts to receive the subsidy, but it is limited to businesses located in commercial zones and does not apply to companies operating in residential areas. Diamond Bar Mayor Andrew Tang also shared updates on his city’s public safety. Tang said a Latino police officer recently reported that Diamond Bar residents generally have low awareness of crime prevention. In particular, some Chinese homeowners tend to leave cash, purses, and jewelry at home, making them easy targets for burglars. He explained that once burglars break into a home, they can quickly steal valuables. These criminals often disguise themselves as respectable individuals, driving nice cars and dressing neatly, making them less suspicious. In reality, they may have already spent days surveying the neighborhood before entering through the backyard. Even if an alarm sounds, they can escape within five minutes and may even switch license plates to avoid detection, increasing the difficulty of police investigations. Tang urged residents to stay vigilant and strengthen home security to avoid becoming easy targets. He also encouraged residents to report crimes so police can gather more leads. He emphasized that even if a case is not solved immediately, police can continue investigating based on available clues and may eventually solve it. He called on residents to cooperate with police by providing footage or information to help reduce local crime rates. Regarding city development, Tang said Diamond Bar is working to increase revenue, relying mainly on property taxes and sales taxes. However, due to the impact of COVID‑19, sales tax growth has been limited and housing market activity has declined, increasing financial pressure. With the city nearing full development, few new homes are being built, older homes make up a large proportion, and some young people are moving away—leading to an aging community. He noted that Diamond Bar is known for its excellent school districts, and the city will continue promoting policies to attract young families, maintain community vitality, and strengthen competitiveness. |
